I suppose one would say our church building has sort of a coastal appearance. It looks kind and friendly, doesn't it? and we try to make it that way inside as well.
Yachats is a special place and many visitors have learned to appreciate that fact. For example, one of our members came through here many years ago on his way somewhere else. But once he spent a couple of nights in the village, it became his yearly vacation site for many years to come, leading ultimately to him marrying a full time resident of Yachats (who also 'happened' to be a member of this church)! He says Yachats Baptist always welcomed him with open arms.
So, "come and see" for yourself if "This is the place you want to be" (quote from a poem about this area).
Since Yachats is primarily a vacationers' type town, people are coming and going on a very regular basis. Well, yes, there are a few hundred full-time residents, but many of the houses and cabins one sees here are vacation sites.
For these reasons, our church has different emphases on how we function. This is not to say that our adherance to the proclamation of the Gospel message and/or worship is lessened in any way. No indeed. It is our desire to make visitors feel "at home" here, believing they are in a loving, Bible-believing church, even though our style may be a bit different from that to which they are accustomed.
Our times of services and fellowship may be different than in your home church. We have designed things and our hours hoping that it will fit the vacationer and at the same time be enjoyable for our regular folks too.
Yachats is basically a retirement community. There are not a lot of young families in our town. So, people passing away might be more of a frequent occurrence in our town than you are used to seeing in your home community. But then, this shouldn't be thought of sadly, for even the apostle Paul said that for him to die was "GAIN", meaning of course that He was expecting to go immediately into the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ when he passed on! However, a living spouse often relocates out of our area to be with other family members in another part of the country. So, we are quite accustomed to these conditions. Our congregation moves like the sea, with ebbs and tides, thus the numbers of people in our congregation "flow" up and down.
But those of us who remain are determined not to let these facts lessen our enthusiasm and desire to fulfill our destiny and responsibility to work in the "Lord's Vineyard" here in Yachats. Again we say, "Come and See".
